ANNOUNCING THE

YALE SUMMER CABARET SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
love, blood and fools

New Haven, CT – Yale Summer Cabaret announces its 37th Season: the Yale Summer Cabaret Shakespeare Festival, led by Devin Brain (Artistic Director) and Tara Kayton (Producer).  The Cabaret will transform from Prospero’s island to the forest of Arden to the battlefields of England, as an ensemble of ten actors performs three productions in rotating repertory all summer long.  Audiences are invited to come early and enjoy dining by Anna of Anna’s on Orange, and participate in free workshops and discussions that expose the boundless theatricality of the Bard's enduring texts.

The season opens with The Tempest, directed by Jack Tamburri.  Set sail across a roiling, crashing sea of gripping stories and breathtaking language to discover Shakespeare’s most magical play.  On a fantastical island, Prospero’s plans unfold as he punishes his enemies, rewards his friends and introduces his cloistered daughter to a brave new world.  A tale of first love, betrayal and emancipation that will enchant audiences of all ages.  The Tempest performs June 23 – August 12.

A banished duke, a love-struck rube and a girl, pretending to be a boy, pretending to be a girl – all these and more fill the forest of Arden in Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It, directed by Louisa Proske.  Indulge your teenage runaway fantasies and follow Rosalind and Celia to this lovesick forest, where love is anatomized, magnified, satirized, versified and eulogized in all its glorious forms.  As You Like It performs July 1 – August 14.

In Shakespeare’s War of the Roses saga, history is a game of bloodshed between two noble families.  At the center of this storm stands Margaret, a woman of passion and mystery.  Rose Mark’d Queen, adapted from Henry V, Henry VI (Part 1, 2 and 3) and Richard III, directed by Devin Brain, follows the young Frenchwoman, schooled in betrayal and ambition by the British court, as she becomes a wife, a mother, a killer and a queen. Rose Mark’d Queen performs July 7 – August 13.

The Festival will also offer audiences the chance to dive deeper into Shakespeare’s rich and varied body of work with the Immersion Series: free workshops led by the ensemble before every performance.  Each program is approximately 30 minutes, and begins at 6:45pm for evening performances (12:45pm for matinees).  Visit www.summercabaret.org/immersion to learn more about each workshop series.

The Yale Summer Cabaret Shakespeare Festival runs from June 23 – August 14, 2011.  Performances are Tuesday – Sunday at 8pm (doors open for dinner at 6pm), and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2pm (doors open at 1pm – refreshments available).  Tickets start at $25, and subscriptions to all three shows are $70.  Student and group pricing is available.
